Health Professions Education (HPE) is at the core of healthcare provision. It gives you the skills needed to teach future health professionals, such as doctors and nurses. This means they will be able to meet the challenges of worldwide modern healthcare.

In this module you'll explore the principles of teaching, learning, and assessment. You'll also look at how to design learning for Health Professions Education.

This will help you reflect on what becoming a Health Professions Educator means.

What you will learn

In this module, you will learn about:

  • literature searching and evidence-informed practice
  • reflective and reflexive practice
  • critical reasoning
  • education theories and philosophies
  • designing learning - aims and objectives, types of learning, assessing, and lesson planning
  • embedding equality, diversity, and inclusion principles in teaching
  • assessment principles and types
  • feedback - self-assessment, feedback, programmatic assessment
  • balancing the integration of theory and practice.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • evaluate the major educational theories
  • apply the principles of learning, teaching and design to your own context
  • evaluate different types of assessment tools, when and how to use
  • design and reflect on the complexities of self-assessment/peer assessment tools
  • develop aims, objectives and learning outcomes
  • reflect on your development as a health professions educator
  • consider how AI can enhance learning and potential concerns

Assignments / assessment

Your assignments are designed to be authentic and useful to you in your workplace. They will be supported by formative assessments.

You will be assessed by:

  • written assignment (lesson plan) (40%)
  • written assignment (assessment tool design) (40%)
  • presentation (20%)

This module does not have a final exam.
