Change is inevitable. Key to success is how changes are led and innovations are supported.

In this module you will look at current thinking in leadership and change management. You will also look at how this can apply to your own workplace.

You'll identify a change management project early in the module. Working with the tutors, peers and materials, you'll put your plan into action.

The module will run for 12 weeks, with two intakes per year in January and May.

What you will learn

In this module, you will learn about:

  • the terms leadership, innovation and change management
  • the principles of change management and strategic thinking
  • operationalising a change project
  • leadership roles of the individual
  • how context and workplace relationships affect leadership and the leadership process
  • power, authority, ethics and influence
  • current thinking in leadership research and education
  • developing and delivering a plan for change (including within your own workplace)
  • how to engage in reflective practice for your own change project, the module and the course as a whole
  • developing your academic writing and reflexive writing skills.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • appraise literature and theories on leadership, change management, and innovation in healthcare education
  • reflect on leadership, innovation and change-management principles
  • apply the theory to practice in healthcare education
  • propose and carry out an educational change project
  • incorporate evidence-based practice and strategies in healthcare education
  • apply your knowledge and skills in your own workplace
  • reflect on your own planning, preparation and delivery of learning, and implementing a change in healthcare education
  • judge the contribution of leadership, innovation and change management in healthcare education.

Assignments / assessment

  • written assessment (reflective essay and change project report) (100%)

You will also complete formative learning activities. These will help guide your development and preparation of your project report.

This module does not have a final exam.

The weekly chapters are spread across ten weeks. You will also have two extra weeks to finalise your assignment. You will have access to all materials from the start of the module.
