You will be introduced to the skills required for successful postgraduate study.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • gain an overview of the online platform (VLE), its structure, content, and navigation
  • meet your peer learners via the discussion forums
  • learn about the Programme Regulations, Student Handbook, and Student Partnership Agreement
  • explore skills for online learning, student-centred learning, and digital literacy. You will be able to discuss these with your peers
  • learn about the resources available for online learning. This includes those within the VLE and the wider University
  • undertake activities on literature searching and information retrieval
  • learn about academic integrity. This includes appropriate referencing, plagiarism, and University policy on Academic Misconduct
  • receive guidance on academic writing
  • undertake activities relating to the assessment process. This includes:
    • marking criteria
    • submitting assignments using Feedback Studio
    • understanding a Similarity Report
    • accessing feedback
    • the course’s approach to self-assessment and feedback dialogue

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • complete your online profile
  • navigate the VLE
  • access reading lists
  • post to discussion forums
  • know your rights and responsibilities as a postgraduate student
  • recognise the learning skills required for online postgraduate study. You will also know where to seek support
  • perform a literature search on a topic and write a short summary
  • know where to find the assessment framework for the course. This includes the grading system
  • upload an assignment to Feedback Studio, use a Similarity Report, and access feedback

Assignments / assessment

  • formative assignment
    • practise the skills introduced in this module. You will familiarise yourself with the submission process and similarity report
    • find four different types of resources on a topic, produce a 100 words summary using APA citations and references, and upload it to Feedback studio

This module is not assessed.

If you are a part time student, you will complete this module two to three weeks prior to the commencement of your first credit-bearing module.
