This module lets you do a major, individual research project. It can be experimental, analytical, a survey, or on-site, and must address a specific engineering problem. The project will relate to your MSc pathway/specialism.

This module will let you practice the skills from the core modules. You will build on the knowledge gained in the pathway and/or elective modules.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • gain in-depth knowledge of the subject area of the research project
  • develop an understanding of the research process
  • gain thorough understanding of the specific engineering problem that your research project addresses

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • carry out the laboratory, computational, or field work processes relevant to the research project
  • plan and execute a medium-term research project
  • manage risks associated with project activities (all projects), particularly where these are related to laboratory work or fieldwork (project dependent)
  • present the results of a research project
  • analyse and interpret the results of a research project
  • write a dissertation

Assignments / assessment

  • coursework (100%)

Teaching methods / timetable

  • hands-on research training
    • laboratory, computational, or field work
  • supervisor meetings
    • discussion of programme of work, results, and interpretation of results
