This module will provide you with the opportunity to gain experience in planning, organising and carrying out a practical design project. Your project will interface between civil engineering and architecture.
Individual projects will be carried out on an industrial placement. On this, you will be under the supervision of both an academic and an industrial mentor.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- develop skills in research, analysis, problem solving and critical thinking. You will develop these skills through investigative methods and design
- develop a high level of competence, individual responsibility and initiative
- become familiarised with the dynamic of the industrial work environment
- develop mastery of a complex and specialised area of design
- gain an appreciation of the project life cycle (logical progression of research, and time management)
- gain confidence in discussing design choices and assumptions
- gain enhanced skills in project planning, management and implementation
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- appreciate the activities involved in planning and carrying out a successful design project over an extended period
- conduct planning, scheduling and resource identification activities
- defend design choices and assumptions in a presentation / group discussion

This module does not have a final exam.
