The module will introduce you to the basic techniques used to manage the construction process. The module starts at the generic level, with the aim of providing a foundation on the topic.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • develop skills in planning and managing construction projects
  • learn about the role of the client, designer, and contractor
  • examine and compare procurement and contract selection methods
  • learn about Whole Life Costing and productivity
  • explore the issue of ethics in construction
  • learn how project risk is managed through tendering and health and safety management
  • examine how construction project are scheduled and planned
  • discover how Building Information Modelling (BIM) and programming are employed in project management
  • explore how the Construction, Design, and Management (CDM) Regulations address health, safety, and risk management

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • devise a strategic method statement for a construction project
  • reflect on ethical choices engineers may face before, during, and after the construction process
  • programme a construction project using project management software
