Tools, Software and Databases module (BS51012)
Develop skills in the software, databases, and digital tools used in health and science communication.
In this module, you will develop the digital literacy and practical skills needed to work effectively with scientific and health data in a communications role.
You will explore a wide range of tools and databases including:
- core MS Office applications
- PubMed
- Medline
- clinicaltrials.gov
- Cochrane
- referencing software
- visual and project management tools.
You will also develop search strategies for interrogating databases and learn how to design and execute systematic reviews.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- Develop knowledge of key software and databases used in health and science communication
- Build skills in designing and executing database search strategies
- Understand the principles and practice of systematic reviews and meta-analysis
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate critical awareness and appreciation of software, tools, and databases relevant to science and health communication
- Plan and accurately execute a project using suitable methodology and a range of appropriate approaches
- Mine, manipulate, evaluate and interpret data from science, health and epidemiology databases
- Interpret research data based on critical appraisal of its quality
