This module comprises a year in a Life Sciences-relevant industry, where you will gain skills and understanding from being embedded in a real workplace setting.
What you will learn
In this module you will:
- gain practical work experience in a relevant Life Sciences industry or organisation
- formalise the year-long placement with a 'Work Placement Learning Agreement', drawn up prior to commencement between the workplace supervisor, your academic supervisor, and yourself, setting out expectations
- participate in a work placement, which will include technical or non-technical work relevant to research or industry in the Life Sciences
- as appropriate, undergo induction processes, including health and safety training and mastering new technologies or specialised equipment or software
- foster client interactions and professionalism, developing professional standards and expectations
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- demonstrate a set of skills and understanding from working in a real workplace setting in a Life Sciences-related industry or organisation
- apply Life Sciences knowledge in a professional setting
- understand real-world Life Science industry practices and expectations
Assignments / assessment
- coursework (100%)
The module will be assessed by coursework comprising a reflective report documenting your placement year experience and a poster to communicate structural and business aspects of the employer organisation or company.
This module does not have a final exam.
Teaching methods
You will undertake a year-long work placement under the supervision of an assigned workplace supervisor, coordinated through the University. The type of work will vary with the employer. You will have regular check-ins with an appointed staff member at the University.
