This module will consider health and illness from a global perspective and consider the factors that influence it.

What you will learn

In this module, you will learn:

  • about global disease and health epidemiology
  • historical development of global health as a concept, movement and interdisciplinary medical speciality.
  • factors that drive global health priorities, and the consequences of current unmet global health need
  • health policy, health systems and their critical importance in determining health outcomes
  • social dimensions of health and wellbeing
  • impact of deprivation and inequalities on health
  • how policy interventions may influence the impact of social determinants on disadvantaged population
  • environment and health
  • ethical issues associated with global health and healthcare.
  • trends in globalisation, the role of global institutions and international law and human rights, and international development

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand and be able to explain some of the key challenges in global health
  • describe, critically discuss, and analyse how each of these important drivers shape and influence global health trends and outcomes

This module does not have a final exam.
