​​The ability to recognise opportunities and turn ideas into viable ventures is an increasingly valued skill in biomedical engineering. This module will provide you with an applied experience of entrepreneurship — linking theory to practice and developing the core skills needed to create, evaluate, and communicate a new biomedical engineering business concept. 

​You will explore the components of entrepreneurial success and failure, business start-up processes, digital entrepreneurship, sustainability, ethics, and corporate social responsibility. They develop skills in creativity, negotiation, networking, and selling, and gain practical understanding of intellectual property, financial modelling, and market analysis. The module culminates in students producing a biomedical-related concept — including a viability report and visualisation — and presenting and defending their idea. Teaching involves lectures, tutorials, and workshops supported by practitioners and educators from industry.

​In this module, you will: 

  • ​Gain practical experience of the real-world entrepreneur/intrapreneur through applied learning. 
  • ​Apply entrepreneurial concepts and skills in a realistic business context. 
  • ​Understand the components of entrepreneurial success and failure. 
  • ​Critically explore contemporary challenges and opportunities for entrepreneurs in biomedical engineering. 
  • ​Understand sustainability, ethics, and social corporate responsibility in the 21st-century business environment. 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​Demonstrate applied knowledge of entrepreneurial concepts and practice in a realistic setting. 
  • ​Critically assess markets, customers, and industry to evaluate the feasibility of a biomedical business idea. 
  • ​Understand business start-up processes and develop entrepreneurial skills including creativity, negotiation, and networking. 
  • ​Develop understanding of IP, financial modelling, and cost analysis. 
  • ​Produce a visualisation and viability assessment of a biomedical engineering product or service concept

Assignments / assessments

​​Viability Report (70%) 

  • ​Written report assessing the feasibility and sustainability of a biomedical engineering business concept, including market analysis, financial modelling, and IP considerations. 

​Presentation (30%) 

  • ​Oral presentation and defence of the biomedical engineering venture concept. 

​This module does not have a final exam.​
