APCP Dissertation module (AP41001)
You will write a supervised Art & Philosophy dissertation at honours level. You will focus on issues of cultural significance between art and philosophy
In this module you will explore art and philosophy. You will by discuss them through a written dissertation of between 6,000-8,000 words.
You will participate in group workshops. These will investigate different ways of moving across fields, and develop their research skills.
You will produce a self-directed dissertation. You will do so with the support of an individual philosophy supervisor and art adviser. This will focus on specific issues of cultural significance at the intersection of art and philosophy.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- be supported to think critically and creatively about art and philosophy
- develop an insight into the relationship between philosophical understanding and emerging studio practice
- learn to put art and philosophy into a broader interdisciplinary context. This will cover cultural, historical, and critical aspects
- explore relations between theory and practice
- deepen your practice through theoretical reflections. You will also be able to deepen theoretical issues from a practical perspective
- learn transferrable skills. This will be done through the oral and written expression of ideas, and through the design of your dissertation
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- understand themes at the intersection of art and philosophy
- show a capacity to think creatively and critically
- show an understanding of the dynamic relationship between philosophy and practice
- have the ability to express and defended your ideas and opinions

- 6,000-8,000-word written dissertation (100%)
This module does not have a final exam.
Teaching methods / timetable

- individual supervision sessions
- You will have these throughout the semester with your philosophy supervisor and art adviser
