Communicating Research for Healthcare Professionals module (AG12060)
Develop academic writing and critical reading skills to communicate healthcare research effectively.
Writing up research is one of the most demanding tasks in postgraduate study. This module gives you the practical skills to do it well, with a focus on the specific conventions of healthcare research writing.
You will:
- build advanced academic vocabulary
- practise strategies for reading and analysing complex texts,
- develop your writing across all key sections of a research manuscript: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, and discussion.
The module also covers critical appraisal of research literature, referencing conventions, and the ethical use of sources. Classes are interactive and draw on authentic healthcare research texts, with regular feedback on your work.
This is a pass/fail module. It does not contribute to the classification of any award and is taken in addition to your standard credits.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- develop advanced academic writing skills specific to healthcare research, including how to structure research projects and dissertations effectively
- build the ability to critically evaluate research literature, methodologies, and findings
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- adjust reading strategies to suit complex healthcare research texts and analyse materials using outlining, paraphrasing, and comparing perspectives
- produce well-structured academic writing with clear argumentation and appropriate conventions at sentence and paragraph level
- synthesise and evaluate information from multiple sources in an ethical and disciplinary-appropriate way
Assignments / assessment
Written assignment (100%, Pass/Fail)
- Portfolio writing task which includes planning, reflection and editing.
This module does not have a final exam.
