You will learn essential skills in academic writing. These are a requirement for effective planning and writing your dissertation.

You will also explore and strengthen your understanding of what makes a high-quality dissertation.

You will also taking part in regular interactive activities to clarify your own research ideas.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • develop reading skills and strategies
  • gain a critical awareness of text and text organisation
  • practise academic structure at sentence, paragraph and whole-text level
  • understand the importance of the key chapter and section aims in the dissertation
  • build your awareness of the main differences in writing styles. You will learn the difference between academic and general writing styles

By the end of the module you will be able to:

  • understand the aims of each chapter in the dissertation
  • use knowledge of research methods and academic writing to meet these chapter aims
  • be critical and reflective on their own, and others’, written work
  • produce a dissertation outline with associated timeline

Assignments / assessment

  • reflective essay (80%)
  • active participation and attendance (20%)

This module does not have a final exam
