About
Our cycling studio is a fantastic facility, with excellent Wattbikes and a state-of-the-art Intelligent Cycling (IC) programme for you to experience. Wattbikes are designed to give you a “real” cycling experience, so as close to a road bike as you can get and an upgrade from a regular spin bike.
The Intelligent Cycling (IC) digital format for our classes and virtual player is free to access and you can also use the app to train on the Wattbikes in the gym. Riders require the IC app during workouts, so they can cycle at the correct intensity and take control of the virtual player. Download the app onto your smart device and complete the My Profile section. To do that, click on the burger menu, account & security, then my account. Beginners can estimate their FTP (Functional Threshold Power) by taking their weight in kg’s and multiplying that amount X 2.
You must be an Exercise or Sport & Exercise member to book and attend these classes.ns.
Highlights
- Bike inductions are scheduled to help beginners get set up on their Wattbike and familiarise themselves with the IC app before use in class.
- These are ideal entry-level workouts new to fitness because the IC app shows you how to monitor your intensity by mapping your effort to the correct colour displayed on your app. This stops you from working too hard!!
- Bike beats are a more social style of cycling class that are led by a teacher. Sessions are simple to follow and are designed to let great music motivate you to keep on pedalling. Suitable for beginners and more experienced riders because the app calculates personalised intensity levels.
- Colour ride classes are teacher-led and focus on how to regulate your intensity by understanding our colour related training levels. These levels on your smart device are closely followed so you can experience a bespoke cycling training session. Again, suitable for everyone because the app has calculated personalised intensity levels.
- Free ride classes are not teacher led. A workout will be pre-selected and using your app you can follow the on-screen workout with everyone in your peloton.
- For the virtual player, use the IC app to select your own session from the list of over 30,000 ready-made workouts. Book your timeslot on the app. You can also select how you want to view the workout experience with the high-quality gaming graphics. Don’t worry if you’re unsure what to do, there are simple instructions in the studio to keep you right.
- Experienced riders can immerse themselves in all the data provided by the app, but can also link to Stava, Garmin and your HR monitor if you like to wear one.
- If you’re not attending a bike induction before class, we recommend arriving 5 minutes prior to any session to set yourself up for a comfortable and safe ride.

We recommend all new users to have a 15-minute induction (bookable on the app). These run before some of the teacher-led classes so you can stay on and put your newfound knowledge into practice. Remember to book in for the class too! Watch our induction clip to find out more.
Bike beats, colour ride, free ride and virtual player sessions can all be booked on the app or at SpAH reception.
