About

Portrait of Tess Hadoke

My work is largely inspired by the personality and humour in the things I see, and I strive to capture a sense of these elements in my drawing. Some main themes in my illustrations include animals, nature, and history, particularly in pursuit of narrative and educational purposes.

I enjoy using drawings for storytelling and find that I can create lively pictures which suit children’s book illustration. Creating imagery which stimulates interest and active engagement is important to me, which is why I have enjoyed making interactive illustrative material. I enjoy the idea that one of my illustrations can make someone smile before they engage in an educational activity which could, therefore, make their learning more enjoyable. This idea was the stimulus for creating a children’s interactive activity book (which can be drawn on with whiteboard pen) for a personal project.

My fascination with creating engaging interactive material has motivated me to experiment with a variety of different materials in my picture-making during my time at DJCAD. I’ve found that a mixture of traditional and digital techniques suits my work, with the looseness and textures of my mark-making pairing well with bold digital colours. I’ve also enjoyed experimenting with the processes of laser-cutting and dye-sublimation for 3D outcomes.

I think my characterful illustrative style has the flexibility to fit many a brief, as my interest in creating engaging and lively imagery could suit many purposes.

"A Feathery Fall" - Children's Picture Book

A loose, textural drawing of 2 brightly coloured, wide-eyed chickens walking through grass, away from the viewer.

"A Feathery Fall" follows the adventures of two little chickens who search for a new shelter after the leaves fall off their favourite tree.

DJCAD x V&A: "Mood Dial Badge"

A layout of images of a layered, circular, spiked wooden badge, with etched roman numerals around the edge like a sundial and four emotional line-etched medieval-style face profiles. One looks content, one joyous, one sad and one despairing.

A rotating badge, made of laser cut MDF, which spins to show different emotional profiles to suit the mood of the wearer. Inspired by a 1550CE ceiling panel exhibited in V&A Dundee's Scottish Design Galleries, and made to, hypothetically, be sold in the gift shop.

DJCAD x V&A: "Mood Dial Badge" - Demonstration

A demonstration of the rotating badge, showing the four profiles the wearer can choose to display.

"Scribble What You See: A Reusable Activity Book"

A layout of 3 images, on a bright blue and yellow background, of a thick-paged, rounded edged book with 4 pages, held together with 2 ring binder clips in holes at each left corner. The pages are decorated with faded blue and yellow paint splatters and jaunty writing. In the largest image, the book is displayed standing up

An activity book for children made with whiteboard material detachable pages which can be taken outside and repeatedly drawn on, in order to encourage interaction with nature. Made with dye-sublimation techniques on Unisub hardboard.
