About

Black and white portrait of Hannah Rowney.

This will showcase 3 projects that I completed in my final year at DJCAD.

‘Clickbait’ is my submission to the D&AD New Blood Awards. Penguin’s brief was to design a concept to make reading an unmissable part of pop culture. My concept pitches a Penguin & YouTube collaboration to thrust books into the heart of pop culture. Occasional book buyers love to read, but it often becomes “out of sight, out of mind.” Instead, people spend their free time getting lured in by online clickbait. My solution aims to ‘flip the narrative’ by adopting clickbait language to advertise books, enticing people to rediscover the excitement and joy of books.

‘A Grimm Deconstruction’ is my response to the ISTD brief 'Shaping the World'. It explores the significance of 'Grimm’s Fairy Tales' and the influence it has had on shaping social and political world views. I traced the origins and evolution of the most beloved fairy tales; from folklore shared by German women in the 1800s, to the box-office hits and best-selling story books that have moulded childhoods for generations. I highlighted the power wielded by fairy tales in shaping young minds and the problematic tropes that linger within them.

The final project is my submission to Penguin’s Cover Design Award. Through this project I challenged myself to use typography as image, in an evocative and eye-catching way. My design represents the light and dark of Dara McAnulty’s journey and the inspiring way he sees beauty in the tiniest of creatures.
