We spoke with Abby, now a Foundation Year 2 doctor in Tayside, who received a Joan Markie & Richard Smith Scholarship. She shares how this financial support enabled her to focus on her studies and set her up to succeed.
Hey, Abby! Could you describe the support you received, and how it made a difference?
I was privileged to be awarded the Joan Markie & Richard Smith Scholarship, open to sixth-year pupils attending a local authority school in Dundee who receive an offer to study at the University. The financial boost helped open doors and shape my positive experience of higher education, from funding my first laptop to a memorable weekend away for the medical school’s Grad Ball.
How did this support change your day-to-day life? For instance, did it let you focus more on your studies, research, or activities instead of having to worry about finances?
Absolutely, there are so many additional costs to university life, and they all add up! As a full-time student, it can be difficult to find employment and especially something with flexible working hours.
We'd love a specific story! Can you think of one moment or specific success you've had at the University that was only possible because you received this support?
For me, the ultimate success was earning my degree. I can’t think of a prouder moment than walking across the Caird Hall stage in front of my family and friends after six years of hard work.
It was an emotional day of reflection and appreciation for the people who got me through, including my generous donors.
What are your goals for the future?
I hope to remain in Dundee for my next phase of training, with an aim to specialise in haematology and support teaching within the University’s medical school. Outside the hospital, I’m a keen runner, swimmer and hillwalker, with a long list of Munros still to bag!
If you could speak directly to the donors right now, what's the most important thing you'd want them to know about how their gift has genuinely affected your life?
Your kindness not only allowed me to succeed but served as a crucial reminder to give back. The impact of philanthropy can often be overlooked, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude for your support and the difference it made to my education. Thank you.
