Abstract:
Advanced cellular models are an essential preclinical tool in drug discovery and development, as they incorporate the genetic sequence of the individuals from whom they are derived. Yet, of the thousands of such models available globally, only two have been developed end-to-end on the African continent. Given that Africa harbours more genetic diversity than the rest of the world combined—and that this diversity contributes significantly to suboptimal treatment outcomes—there is an urgent need to establish African-derived, African-made preclinical tools that are accessible to the global research community.
