School of Business Masters project: Local Internship Student Code of Conduct

This document is for all students applying to undertake an internship as part of the School of Business Students Local Internship Option

Please read this document and ensure you understand what is expected of you when applying for and undertaking this internship.

Student responsibilities and agreement

When applying for an internship position, I agree:

  • that it is my responsibility to read guidance carefully before applying.
  • to seek further advice and guidance promptly where needed to meet deadlines.
  • to regularly check my university student email account, shortlisted candidates may be offered interviews within short timeframes based on internship host availability.

If invited to interview for an internship position, I agree:

  • to respond promptly, and within timeline guidance.
  • prepare adequately for my interview, using the opportunity information, and Careers Service guidance provided during the application process.
  • to inform my prospective internship host and Careers Service at [email protected] immediately if I can no longer undertake the interview.

If offered an internship, I agree:

  • to respond to any offer of internship within 3 working days.
  • to advise the Careers Service urgently if I have not received contact from the Internship Supervisor within timeline guidance.
  • to inform the Careers Service at [email protected] immediately if I can no longer undertake the internship accepted.

When undertaking my internship, I agree: 

  • to attend my internship as advised by the Internship Supervisor and adhere to host employer working practices as directed by Internship Supervisor.
  • to be reliable and committed to my internship.
  • to act professionally and appropriately, follow all instructions given by the Internship Supervisor paying particular attention to confidentiality and data protection.
  • that in any event that I cannot attend my internship as agreed I will inform my Internship Supervisor immediately and let them know why.
  • to not undertake any tasks which I judge to be dangerous or inappropriate. I must take reasonable care and work in line with the host employer Health and Safety procedure. If I am unsure about any activity, I should consult my Internship Supervisor immediately.
  • to consult the Careers Service immediately if I have any problems during my internship that cannot be resolved with my Internship Supervisor.
  • to return any Host Employer property at the end of my internship.
  • to inform the Internship Supervisor about any relevant additional support requirements as soon as possible.
  • that the University is not responsible for reimbursement of my travel expenses.
  • that it is my responsibility to manage my time and commitments.

 

Important information
  • Undergraduate students will undertake an 8-week internship project, working no more than 20 hours a week.
  • Taught Postgraduate students will undertake an 8-week internship project, working full-time.
  • All hybrid internships will involve a minimum requirement of 1 day a week working in person.
  • When undertaking an internship as part of the School of Business Local Internship Scheme, you cannot undertake any other work during the hours you have agreed to work with your host employer.
  • For example, if your internship working hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00, you must not undertake any other work during this time.
  • You must not arrange adjustments with your host employer to undertake your internship work outside of required hours to accommodate other employment.
