Policy statement

The University of Dundee recognises the risks to employees, students and others from defective gas installations and undertakes to apply the standards of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 (as amended) henceforth referred to as GS(IU) Regulations 1998 and its associated Approved Code of Practice to gas fittings under its control.

Estates and Buildings will ensure that anyone who works on a gas fitting under the university’s control is competent and is registered with Gas Safe.

Arrangements

Director of Campus Services will ensure that:

  • all gas installation and repair work is carried out in compliance with the GS(IU) Regulations 1998, and that where other repair or maintenance work is undertaken that may affect a gas flue, that this work is assessed for its impact on the gas flue before being undertaken.
  • notices are posted indicating the position of the cut off control for the gas supply in each building or dwelling.
  • gas pipework is colour coded or otherwise marked to show its content.
  • diagrams are posted showing the configuration of the gas supply when a secondary meter is used in residential accommodation.
  • emergency notices giving instructions on what actions to take in the event of a gas leak or other gas-related emergency are posted.
  • any gas safety incident which is brought to their attention is reported to Safety Services.

Staff should contact E&B on +44 (0)1382 388181 immediately if they smell gas.   If they are in no doubt that there is a major leak of gas (for example: obvious damage to pipework, overpowering smell) then they should evacuate the building immediately by telling occupants to leave. They should open windows and doors as they leave but should NOT activate the fire alarm or switch off lights or other electrical equipment.

Staff should familiarise themselves with the location of gas controls in their building.

Safety Services will:

  • report any reportable gas safety incidents to HSE.
  • investigate any gas safety incidents as necessary.
