Carbon Emission Footprint

The majority of our carbon footprint is the result of our energy emissions. This is not just about switching off equipment, lights etc… to save carbon, it is about the way we utilise our buildings as well. Heating a large lecture theatre that seats 240 people for a class of 40 is not an efficient use of the room space, or leaving the overhead projector running in an empty room. We all have a part to play in reducing the university’s footprint and our own.

Ultimately, all economic activity exists to provide products and services to the end consumer. The link between business emissions and final consumer products is, however, not well understood. This 'consumption-based view' has the potential to allow businesses to target those consumer products and services that have the highest overall carbon emissions. For this reason, the Carbon Trust initiated this study to attribute all carbon emissions to final product and service categories. The report describes the work undertaken and presents the carbon footprint of the most carbon-intensive products and services consumed in the UK.
