Module code

DJ22016

Being able to design objects that use the internet to connect people and services together is an important part of a designer's toolkit.

You will work with open-source microcontroller platforms like Arduino. These will be used on working hardware and software prototypes.

This involves coding, testing, building, and communicating concepts.

You will learn about connected objects. You will learn to design, produce, and document working digital prototypes. These will contribute to the open-source learning community of designer-makers.

This builds on the skills you will learn during the DJ21016 Physical Computing module.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • develop and assess research prototypes that explore connectivity
  • program and integrate technology circuits into working prototypes
  • learn how to use Arduino libraries to interpret data from a range of input methods and physical outputs
  • interpret design concepts for wider audiences using visual and written documentation

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand intermediate programming principles
  • publish design concepts and ‘how-to guides’ to enhance learning and employability
  • design concepts which explore the social, ethical, political, and environmental issues within the Internet of Things (IoT)

Assignments / assessment

  • written critical reflection and documentation (20%)
  • group project design brief (30%)
  • individual project brief (50%)

This module does not have a final exam.

Teaching methods / timetable

Learning will take place in a studio environment using a range of teaching methods such as:

  • lectures
    • These will include demonstrations of software development and hardware use
  • practical workshops
    • These will give you practical hands-on experience in thinking through making
  • tutorials
    • These will allow you to share your work and engage in class discussion

Project work may combine individual and teamwork.

You will also have access to technical support from the Digital Making workshop School Support Specialist staff
