Develop basic research skills needed for effective laboratory work
20
BS11008
This module will equip you to operate safely within a bioscience laboratory. You will work, with appropriate guidance, on a range of practical protocols to successfully employ basic bioscience techniques.
What you will learn
In this module you will:
- acquire skills in fundamental bioscience techniques, including spectrophotometry and microscopy
- learn to follow written protocols and apply experimental approaches to explore biological concepts
- understand laboratory hazards and risks
- accurately record experimental data and analyse results using numerical and statistical methods
- learn how to use electronic tools for data tabulation and analysis
- develop problem-solving, record-keeping, and time-management skills
- learn how to search the scientific literature
- collaborate effectively within a group to meet set targets
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- feel confident working safely in a bioscience laboratory, operating safely with an understanding of relevant hazards and risks
- apply some fundamental laboratory techniques, with confident use of spectrophotometers and microscopes
- conduct laboratory procedures while accurately and reliably recording experimental data using precise methods
