Electronics has literally transformed the world in recent years; Electronic Engineers are developing smarter, faster devices and information processing systems of amazing complexity.

At Dundee our staff have contributed much to the advancement of engineering on the international stage, with a strong electronics research presence in key technology fields such as renewable energy, biomedical engineering, nano-electronics and laser/wireless communications. Undergraduates have the chance to be involved in this research from their second year.

The Electronic Engineering programme enables students to specialise in three main areas, depending on choice of final year modules: Nanoelectronics, Internet Communications, and Renewable Energy Systems. Students possessing these skills are much sought-after by industry. Those studying Electronic Engineering and Physics take additional core physics modules and thus are ideally prepared for a career as a research scientist/engineer.

Because the BEng Electronic Engineering and BEng Electronic Engineering and Physics programmes have a common core, it is posssible to swap between programmes until the end of Level 2, as new interests develop and it becomes clearer to you what sort of professional career you intend to follow.

Professional Accreditation

Our Honours degrees are accredited to BEng level by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) (pending re-accreditation in 2013) which means that the IET has checked and approved the standards of the teaching, the assessment, the laboratories and the staff. When you have graduated and commenced your career, an accredited Honours degree is the first requirement for gaining professional registration with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Survey Camp at the end of second year was a great experience. We were given the opportunity to get practical experience, team bonding and learning in a different environment. It was a really great experience and at the same time, we learnt a lot!

Related Courses

The Electronic Engineering degrees are taught by staff from the Division of Electronic Engineering, Physics and Renewable Energy within the School of Engineering, Physics & Mathematics.

Our teaching uses enhanced resources in the form of state-of-the-art laboratories and expertise in semiconductor devices, microelectronics, micro engineering, computeraided electronic circuit design, optoelectronics and analytical electron microscopy.

Most teaching takes place in small groups with easy access to staff and a personal approach to lectures, tutorials, and practical work. Guidance is available to you throughout your programme of study to ensure that you make good progress.

BEng Honours Degree

A BEng honours degree normally takes four years, full time, you study levels 1-4, as described below.

Degree without Honours

If you choose to study a degree without honours, you study for three years, levels 1-3 below.

Advanced Entry Honours Degree

It is possible to study for most of our honours degrees in one year less if you have the required grades and subjects as listed in the Entry Requirements section. You study levels 2-4 for the BEng or 2-5 for the MEng. There are definite advantages to considering this route as the time needed to study is reduced by one year which enables you to start working and earning earlier.

Direct entry to Level 3 of the BEng is also possible if you have previously studied Electronic & Electrical Engineering or a related subject in further or higher educational establishments.

Level 1

All degree combinations share a common set of modules to establish a good understanding of the foundation subjects upon which the later years of the degrees depend:

Level 4

All students undertake an individual project, plus six modules from a choice of a list of around twelve choices. These modules cover many of the modern topics required by a practising electronics engineer. Your project will be based with a research group or industrial partner.

Previous projects have included:

  • an interactive image system for the diagnosis of sight defects in children
  • robot automation of NCR ATM reliability tests
  • graphical user interface for camera control.

A variety of assessment methods is used, so in some cases we will ask you to submit coursework and laboratory reports, in others you will take examinations, and sometimes we will simply ask you to discuss what you have achieved.

The electronic engineering industry is one of the largest in the world and offers a wide variety of employment opportunities. It is a major high technology industry in the UK with a significant demand for graduates with specialist skills.

Furthermore, our graduates can work confidently in any career in which a sound ability in mathematics, computing or administrative organisation is required, on top of their skills in electronic engineering.

So apart from the mainstream commercial activities of circuit and systems design, of semiconductors and communications, our graduates also take up careers in financial management, broadcasting, with the civil service, and with the police and armed services.

A Dundee engineering degree opens the door to a surprisingly wide range of career opportunities.

There have been many changes to the arrangements for funding students entering higher education in recent years, yet a degree from the University of Dundee, with its high rate of employment success, remains a cost-effective option.

The fees you pay will, in most cases, depend on your current country of residence.

The fee shown is annual, and may be subject to an increase each year.

Scottish and EU students can apply to the Students Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS) to have tuition fees paid by the Scottish Government.

Rest of the UK students can apply for financial assistance, including a loan to cover the full cost of the tuition fees, from the Student Loan Company.

What skills, qualities and experience do I need?

  • We are looking for you to demonstrate enthusiasm for Electronic Engineering in your personal statement. Tell us why you are attracted to the subject, what particular aspects interest you, what you have heard or read about it that you find exciting.
  • Do you have any engineering hobbies? Belong to any clubs where science or engineering feature strongly? Maybe you have worked as part of a group in a project at school, or you have collaborated with others for part of a Duke of Edinburgh award.
  • Good engineers tend to be careful planners, clear thinkers and able to get a rapid but accurate grasp on a problem. Are you able to extract the essential elements of a problem and come up with realistic solutions?
  • If you have worked in an engineering or industrial environment, for work experience, as a holiday job, or full-time, we would be interested to know. What did you learn on the job?
  • What science or engineering-based TV programmes do you like, and why? How do you think Electronics might progress in the future?
  • Tell us about how you relax - hobbies, sports, reading, socialising... Success as a student depends very much on a healthy work-life balance - how do you achieve this now, and how will you do so against the demands made on your time as a full-time university student?

Tips for your application

  • In the early years of study it is usually easy to transfer from one Electronic Engineering programme to another; therefore, you should apply for only one programme.
  • If you are unsure about which programme you would like to follow, then you are advised to apply in the first instance for the MEng in Electronic Engineering. Subject to progress in the first two years, some students may be required to transfer to the BEng.
  • We'll be looking to see that your personal statement explains your interest in the subject, that you are well-motivated and possess the necessary attributes to make progress on the programmes we offer, and how you believe the course is appropriate to your future plans.
  • Referees should note that the reference is used as the basis for the assessment of academic performance, and as support for the personal statement. Assessors will consider the accuracy and consistency of the predicted grades in the light of previous academic achievement (taking into account reasons why this is not the case), evidence of effort and a positive attitude towards studies, and if there are any specific educational or other special circumstances.
