In the School of Accounting and Finance we aim to help you develop the skills and techniques required to enter a variety of rewarding careers.
We want you to understand the power and limitations of accountancy and financial techniques; how financial information can be used, abused and misunderstood; how it can help society to function and how it can contribute to society's problems.
Our overall commitment to providing a stimulating, supportive, friendly and well organised environment for our students was recognised by our rating of Excellent by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council.
Your course will be full of variety and will include a good grounding in professional knowledge and skills as well as exposure to many of the latest developments in accounting research to which our department makes a major contribution.
The course material is delivered using a variety of lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, projects and hands-on computer labs. Guest lectures are given by experienced finance practitioners and outside visits are also organised to help you appreciate the real world application of the discipline. Depending on your course choices you might visit financial institutions in Edinburgh and London, as well as a high technology manufacturer to see business processes in practice. Assessment is by a mixture of end of course exams and assessed coursework, which can include essays, computer labs and projects based on group assignments.
