Preparatory reading for Law

Most students coming to study law will have some awareness of law and legal issues. What you will not have is a familiarity with your chosen subject in the way that students coming to study history, science or art will do after studying for Higher or A level at school or college.

To make the transition to studying law a little easier you should prepare by doing some reading. Start with getting into the habit of reading mainstream newspapers such as The Scotsman, The Herald, The Independent, The Guardian, The Times etc. Try also to take an interest in current affairs. Until you now you will probably not have consciously said to yourself that a particular news item has a legal element to it. Start to get into that frame of mind. You will very rapidly find that law is all around you. This approach is a start to the development of legal skills.

In your induction day on 8 September you?ll spend some time looking at a current news story with a legal element and actually identify and analyse the specific legal issue involved.

In addition to reading generally we recommend that you buy and read one of the books listed below before you come. The induction day will proceed on the assumption that you have done the reading before you come. You do not need to buy both the English and Scots books, you should simply buy the book recommended for your stream.

Scots Stream

Scottish Legal System Essentials
Bryan Clark 3rd edition (Edinburgh University Press, Law Essentials Series, RRP £15.99).

English Stream

Letters to a Law Student: A Guide to Studying Law at University
Nicholas McBride 3rd edition (Pearson, RRP £18.99).
