Dundee is approximately 60 miles from Edinburgh International Airport, and can be reached by taxi, train or bus:

Travel to Dundee by bus or train

There is a direct coach (service X90 from Stop E) by National Express from Edinburgh Airport to Dundee city centre. It is available outside the UK arrivals hall 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, approximately every 90 minutes. Tickets start from £12 (£10 for students), and it takes around 80 minutes.

The X90 coach stop in Dundee is outside the Malmaison hotel, which is a short walk to the city campus, and convenient for city centre bus stops or taxi ranks.

There are also direct buses and trains from Edinburgh city centre to Dundee throughout the day. Edinburgh Bus Station and Edinburgh Waverley Railway Station are both located in the city centre (about eight miles from the airport).

Travel to Edinburgh city centre railway / bus stations

The Airport Bus (service 100 from Stop D) from Edinburgh International Airport to Edinburgh city centre is available outside the UK arrivals hall 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It costs £4.50 one way, and takes around 30 minutes. The bus stops at Waverley Bridge which is five minutes walk from the bus and railway stations.  If connecting to the train, get off at Haymarket, and get on your train at Haymarket station.

The Edinburgh Tram leaves from outside the UK arrivals hall between 06:18 and 22:48, 7 days a week. It costs £6.00 one way, and takes around 40 minutes. You must buy your ticket from a vending machine on the platform and validate it before travel. Get off at St Andrew Square tram stop for both bus and railway stations. If connecting to the train only, get off at Haymarket tram stop, and get on your train at Haymarket station.

A taxi from Edinburgh Airport to Edinburgh city centre will cost approximately £25 depending on the time of day. These are available from outside the terminal.

Travel to Dundee by bus

There are regular buses from Edinburgh Bus Station to Dundee Bus Station. The Stagecoach X54 runs between 06:35 and 20:55 and the journey takes 2 hours and 20 mins. The cost of a standard single fare from Edinburgh to Dundee is £16 (save money by asking for a DayRider for £11.20). You pay the driver in cash as you board the bus.

Megabus buses to Dundee must be booked in advance from their website and can be cheaper, however if you miss the bus you have booked you can not use your ticket on a later journey and will have to pay again.

Travel to Dundee by train

There are regular direct trains from Edinburgh Waverley to Dundee. All trains to Aberdeen (or Dyce) stop at Dundee. Edinburgh Waverley is a main station with many facilities, such as places to eat, however you must keep your luggage with you at all times.

Trains run between 05.30 and 23.09 and the journey takes 1 hour and 35 minutes. The cost of a standard single fare from Edinburgh Stations to Dundee is £18.90. You must buy a ticket from a ticket machine on the concourse as there are ticket operated barriers to reach the platforms. Tickets will be checked by an inspector on the train who will validate your ticket on-board during the journey.

It can be cheaper to book your train ticket in advance and pick it up at the station using the credit card you used to pay as identification. Some advance tickets are only valid for particular train company services (e.g. ScotRail or LNER). Please read the details on the ticket website carefully before buying.

There are other stations in Edinburgh called Edinburgh Park and Edinburgh Haymarket. These are commuter stations and it can be trickier to find the correct train. 

Travel to Dundee by taxi

Taxis are available outside the Edinburgh Airport terminal – there is a fixed fare to Dundee which is approximately £137. This option is the quickest, but most expensive method of transport. If there are two or more students travelling together this may provide a cost-effective option.

Visit the airport website if you wish to pre-book a taxi which can be cheaper.

On arrival in Dundee

Taxis are available outside the railway and bus stations, the fare is £5 - £8 to University accommodation. Let the taxi driver know the name of your halls (Belmont, Heathfield, Seabraes or West Park) as they know the quickest routes to each.
