This course provides you with high quality teacher education, qualifying you to teach in Scottish secondary schools in one of the priority subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Home Economics, or Computing Studies. A key emphasis of the course is for you to develop as a leader of learning. This Partnership Induction Model (PIM) is a joint initiative between the Universities of Dundee and the Highlands and Islands, and the course is accredited by the General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS).

Through a combination of experiential learning in a secondary school, online distance learning, and campus-based learning activities, the course seamlessly blends together the initial teacher education phase and the Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS) phase required to become a fully qualified teacher.

For the duration of this 18 month long course you must live full-time in one of our local authority partner areas: Aberdeenshire; Argyll and Bute; Falkirk; Highland Council; Inverclyde; Moray; Scottish Borders; Stirling; or West Lothian. You will also need to be able to undertake placements in schools identified by the local authority partners.

Financial support will be available for the duration of the course.

Successful applicants will be eligible for financial support which is equivalent to point 0 on the Scottish Teacher Salary Scale. This is per annum and is paid for the 18 month duration of the course. This will be paid monthly by the Local Authority in which you are placed.

Compared with traditional PGDE structures you will have more time based in your school, enabling you to take part in extra-curricular activities and contribute to the wider school community. The course will be spread over 18 months, and after successfully completing the course requirements you will have attained the Standards for Full Registration.

You will receive strong support from both your school and the Universities, giving you the greatest opportunity to succeed as a leader of learning. We will help you see the crucial role you will play as an inclusive practitioner, developing STEM subject pedagogies along with knowledge of your wider responsibilities of literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing. Learning and teaching for equity will also be an integral element.

You will be instrumental in building capacity in STEM subject teaching within the rural local authorities.

You will engage with relevant educational principles and pedagogical theories to inform and lead professional practice. You will be able to apply extensive knowledge and secure understanding to plan coherent, progressive and stimulating teaching programmes to lead learning in the classroom. You will also engage in critically reflective practice as an integral part of day-to-day practice, to inform and lead professional enquiry in your school and advance career-long professional learning and expertise.

How you will be taught

You will be taught through a combination of campus-based residential events and online study from your home base in one of our local authority partners.

You will complete learning activities individually and collaboratively in the University virtual learning environment My Dundee, and you will be supported in practice by local authority appointed, experienced professionals as mentors throughout your study.

How you will be assessed

You are assessed through academic written assignments and practical experience.

Written assignments for university-based modules are assessed at SCQF Level 11 (postgraduate)

Professional practice placements are jointly assessed by university-based tutors and school-based supporters, using the Standard for Provisional Registration and the Standard for Full Registration (GTCS, 2012)

Your final professional practice placement is assessed at SCQF level 11 (postgraduate) supported by a professional portfolio.

What you will study

You will study four modules, two content based and two practice based.

The course consists of two parts, the first running from December to June (modules 1 and 2), the second from August to June (modules 3 and 4). Each part will begin with a campus-based residential event supporting your student experience and establishing the learning focus for the modules. This will be followed by supported online study as you move into a combination of school days and study days (this is typically four days per week in school and one day per week study time).

Through this module you will demonstrate your ability to bring together educational theories, concepts and principles with practice, with a focus on the broad general education within the secondary sector (S1-3).

Beginning with a review of your leadership ‘tool-kit’, you will develop a portfolio to evidence the Standard for Full Registration (SFR). You will focus on the curriculum, the professional aspects of your remit and the underlying theory/background information which supports your work.

In this module you will explore leadership of learning through your existing knowledge (from degree/work) of key areas of the curriculum. You will establish a ‘tool-kit’ for leading learning in the classroom, using and developing core leadership skills.

Through this module you will demonstrate your ability to bring together educational theories, concepts and principles with practice, with a focus on the senior phase (S4-6). You will be asked to demonstrate to your mentors and placement assessors your leadership of learning and teaching in the classroom to meet the Standard for Full Registration status.

This course has been developed in close collaboration with local authority partners, to produce graduates who meet the needs of schools and local authorities, and it will be accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

With a strong theme of leadership throughout the course, your development as a leader of learning is emphasised from the start of your career.

Graduates from this course will normally begin their teaching careers in their chosen subject. Thereafter, there are a range of possible routes for career progression, including promoted posts as Principal Teachers or Curriculum Leaders, moving into pupil support or guidance roles, or progressing within management teams in schools. Some may choose to enter other related fields, for example in informal learning settings such as museums, science and discovery centres. Others may undertake further study, for example to become education psychologists or researchers, to pursue careers with national bodies such as Education Scotland, the Scottish Qualifications Authority or the GTCS, or to progress as advisors or directors within local education authorities.

You must have an SCE Higher grade pass in English or equivalent, a National Qualification in Mathematics at SCQF Level 5 (for example, National 5 Mathematics or National 5 Applications of Mathematics, Credit Standard Grade, or Intermediate 2) or equivalent, and either:

  • an Honours degree (2.1 or equivalent) from a higher education institution in the United Kingdom,
  • or a degree of an equivalent standard from outside the United Kingdom

The content of your degree must be relevant to the subject you want to teach. TSQC is the term given to the parts of your degree which are related to the subject as it is taught in Scottish secondary schools and which qualify you to enter a secondary teaching course. As a general rule, a TSQC will represent approximately one third of the total study in one academic year (at least 80 undergraduate credit points of which 40 have to be at Level 8 or above) for the SCQF Framework for higher education. Your degree must contain passes in at least two Teaching Subject Qualifying Credits (TSQC) in the subject you want to teach.

Prior to starting this course you must be eligible to join the GTCS Teacher Induction Scheme and you are required to have a satisfactory Disclosure check.

You will need ready access to the internet to complete the course.

You must live (or be able to commit to travelling to schools) within one of the partner local authority areas for the duration of your studies.
