More than a Degree: What studying in Dundee taught me about business, life, and leaving Dubai
Read how School of Business student Sandra, a psychology graduate from Dubai, found new perspectives on business and life in Dundee

When I decided to do my master’s at the University of Dundee, I did not know just how much it would shape me. I moved here from Dubai, where I studied Applied Psychology. Growing up in Dubai, life was always busy. There were lights, people, and noise around every corner. It was a city that never stops, and I loved it. But I was curious about what life could be like elsewhere.
Even though Dubai is rich in culture, Scotland was still something completely new. The desert and skyline were replaced with greenery, hills, and fresh, cool air. The temperature change alone was a shock at first. But I quickly came to appreciate the calm and beauty of my new surroundings.
Why I Chose Dundee
I chose the University of Dundee because it was the only university I found that offered an MSc course combining International Business, Marketing, and Human Resource Management as its main title, not just optional modules. I wanted to study each subject deeply and equally, and this course allowed me to do that. It was exactly what I had been looking for.
From the very first day, I felt welcomed. Whether it was the support from staff or simply how friendly everyone was on campus, I never felt like just another student. Moving to a new country can bring homesickness, but the environment at Dundee really helped me settle in.

Learning across subjects
The course is a mix of different topics, and that is what I love most. We do not just focus on one thing. We learn how global companies work, how to understand people in business, and how to plan marketing strategies that work in different countries.
One of my favourite projects so far was for the brand Al Baik. I studied how they could grow their business in North America. I really enjoyed researching it and using everything I learned in class. The best part? My professor was extremely impressed and encouraged me to take the idea forward. She said it was thoughtful and original, with clear practical recommendations. That support meant a lot to me, and now I am seriously thinking about pitching it to the company.
The Italy project: a real challenge
Another big moment for me was taking part in the 5 Days in Italy competition, which took place on April 4, 2025. It was a fast-paced, creative challenge where we had to plan a full marketing strategy for a holiday rental in Italy. Collaborating with a real client made it feel
more like a job than an assignment. I learned a lot about teamwork, deadlines, and how to stay calm under pressure.
Celebrating Vishu away from home
One of the most special moments for me this year was celebrating Vishu with my friends in Dundee. I usually celebrate it in Dubai with my family. I would call loved ones back in Kerala, wear new clothes my parents bought for me, and eat the sadya meal made at home. But this year was different.
We made the sadya ourselves, wore our own new clothes, and shared the day together as friends. It was emotional but also a beautiful reminder of growth, independence, and learning to build something new even when you are far from home.
Wearing tradition with pride, celebrating Vishu with friends in Dundee.

Life outside class
Outside of lectures, I have focused on maintaining a good balance between my studies and personal time. Mental well-being is important to me, and I try to stay positive by doing activities that bring me joy and peace. I also enjoy writing, reading books, painting, and trying out new recipes. Just walking around Dundee has become one of my favourite ways to relax and reflect. The city is peaceful and filled with character. I have really come to enjoy the little things like tea breaks, scenic routes, and just breathing in fresh air.
One of my favourite recent moments has been watching the cherry blossom season arrive. I visited Dawson Park and it was absolutely beautiful. The trees were in full bloom, and the whole place felt like something out of a storybook. I love seeing how the weather slowly changes from winter to spring, not just in nature, but even in the colours people start wearing. It is one of those small but special joys that makes living here feel so refreshing.
Being a part of the Young Scot programme also helped me access local activities and discounts, which made it easier to explore more of Scotland without worrying too much about a tight student budget.

Looking ahead
Studying here has helped me grow in so many ways. I am learning about business and marketing, but also about people and myself. I hope to use everything I have learned, from psychology to global strategy, in my future career. I now feel more confident in my ability to contribute to the business world.
If you are thinking about studying abroad, especially somewhere like Dundee, I would say go for it. The course, the people, and the country have all helped me feel like I am moving in the right direction.
Dundee taught me that real growth happens when you choose to welcome change instead of fear it.
