Acclaimed and respected by fans and fellow artists alike, Ian’s career in comics spanned eight decades. A year on from his death at the age of 89, the new exhibition at the Lamb Gallery in the University’s Tower Building, pays tribute to his exceptional talent.

Born in Dundee in 1932, Ian was educated at Clepington Primary School then Morgan Academy. He developed his love of art as a child and, after leaving school in 1949, he was taken on as a trainee illustrator in the art department at DC Thomson.

In 1954 he became a freelance artist, working for DC Thomson as well as various comics publishers in London. He became particularly well known for his cover art for the long-running war comic Commando. Between 1970 and 2022 he is estimated to have completed some 1,300 cover designs.

In the late 1970s he moved into science fiction and fantasy, creating work for 2000AD and Starblazer as well as drawing Dan Dare for the relaunched Eagle. His skill at depicting aeroplanes extended to other projects, including illustrating the programmes for the annual RAF Leuchars Air Show.

Museum curator Matthew Jarron said, “In his final years Ian loved interacting with students on the comics courses here at the University. We are delighted to present this major exhibition of his work with the support of Ian’s family and staff at DC Thomson.

“The exhibition covers Ian’s whole career, featuring original artwork from 1955 up to the final piece he completed in 2022. Through sketches and finished pieces it also explores his work process and the development of his unique style.”

‘Ian Kennedy – Celebrating a Comics Legend’ can be seen at the Lamb Gallery from 9.30am-7pm on weekdays and from 11am-4pm each Saturday until 6 May.

A celebration event will be held in the Gallery from 5-6.30pm on Friday 3 March, to which members of the public are welcome.
