Dr Jan Bernd Vorstius is a lecturer in the division of Mechanical Engineering. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Gelsenkirchen, Germany in 2008. He then came to the University of Dundee where he obtained his PhD for his research on a modular bioreactor design for muscle tissue engineering in 2012.
In 2010 Dr Vorstius was appointed as a Lecturer and teaches within the undergraduate Mechanical Engineering and the postgraduate Biomedical Engineering programs, especially Control Engineering, Thermodynamics, Circuit Design and Biomedical Systems.
Dr Vorstius’ research interests are in the biomedical field and concentrate on medical devices and tissue engineering. The research in tissue engineering is focused especially on engineering musculoskeletal tissues and tissue interfaces to provide possibilities for further research and understanding on diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Enhanced understanding of tissue formation should lead to progress in regenerative medicine.
Dr Vorstius is an associated member of the DIT and IMSaT Dundee and is involved in the research of novel medical devices like colonoscopy robotic devices (CoDIR) to smart endoscopic intervention pills (SonoPill).
Within both research areas he explores new manufacturing techniques to enhance tools used in medical devices and tissue engineering, such as rapid prototyping and electro-spun fibres.
