Top in Scotland and in the top ten in the UK (Guardian University Guide, 2016)

Mechanical Engineering at the School of Science and Engineering provides an exciting mix of research and teaching. Our staff make significant contributions to the field in research, teaching and knowledge transfer.

Mechanical Engineering mixes traditional core engineering principles with emerging technologies to create truly innovative solutions to design and analyse problems.

Our students also participate in Formula Student, Europe's biggest student motorsport event, testing their car each year at Silverstone.

DRIVE team racing car

Mechanical Engineering students gain a great balance of practical and theoretical knowledge by applying what they learn to numerous practical and industrial led projects. The department enters student teams in the Greenpower Corporate Challenge for electric racing cars and Mechanical Engineering students participate in Formula Student, Europe's biggest student motorsport event, testing their car each year at Silverstone.

Formula Student is the largest and best educational engineering competition of its kind in the world. Run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), in partnership with various well-known companies in the industry, it promotes careers and excellence in engineering, by challenging university students to design, build, develop, market and compete as a team with a small single seater racing car.

As a Mechanical Engineering student at our School, taking part in our Formula Student DRIVE team gives you the chance to demonstrate your technical, engineering design and manufacturing skills. Students will learn important lessons on team working, time management, project management, budgeting and presentation: all things that any prospective employer will be looking for.
