We develop novel optical microscopies for life sciences research and translate ultrasound based technologies into clinical practice.

We do this through a wide range of expertise including: complex photonics, lightsheet imaging, optical micromanipulation, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), elastography, lifetime sensitive imaging and spectroscopy and endomicroscopy.

Our members include physicists, biomedical engineers, electronic engineers, mechanical engineers, physiologists, surgeons, radiologists and microscopists. Our research ranges from the fundamental to the clinical yet we are joined by a common goal to meet and solve challenges in the life sciences and medicine. We collaborate with colleagues across the University and have links with the Dundee Imaging Facility, Clinical Research Centre BioDundee and the Institute for Medical Science and Technology. Our research is used to inform our teaching, in particular in our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in biomedical engineering.
