Good Laboratory Practice

Safety Policy Arrangement 54-2013

Policy Statement

University of Dundee recognises the risks to staff and students carrying out research activities in laboratories, and to other staff and visitors when they are present in a laboratory.  The University is committed to reducing these risks to a level which is as low as is reasonably practicable through the implementation of good laboratory practice by staff and students carrying out research; and by specific risk assessments for other staff and visitors.

Arrangements

All staff and students carrying out research activities in a laboratory (i.e. research staff and students) will adopt good laboratory practice as detailed in the Good Laboratory Practice Handbook.

Research staff will decide by risk assessment which parts of good laboratory practice are implemented by their visitors, and they will ensure their visitors comply e.g. wearing of laboratory coats and eye protection.

Line managers of non-research staff working in laboratory facilities (e.g. cleaners and Safety Services’ hazardous waste technicians) will decide by risk assessment which measures are required to prevent injury and ill health to their staff.
