Fhionna Moore

Senior Lecturer

Bio

Biography

I studied Ecology at the University of Stirling, where I became interested in evolution and behaviour. I then moved to the School of Psychology at St Andrews where I was awarded an MRC PhD studentship to study the evolution of human reproductive strategies in the context of gendered division of labour (2003 - 2006). I then worked in the Division of Psychology at Abertay University from 2007 - 2012 before moving across the city to the University of Dundee.

I am a member of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, the Human Behavior and Evolution Society and European Human Behaviour and Evolution Society. I am an Associate Editor for 'Evolutionary Psychology'.

Research

Lab websitehttp://blog.dundee.ac.uk/ebr/

I lead the Tayside Suicide Research Network (https://sites.dev.dundee.ac.uk/tsrn/) which is a collaboration of academics across disciplines and professionals from across the community, with the aim of knowledge sharing and research collaboration to better understand suicide.

My interests are primarily in the effects of our allocation to gendered social-roles on health and reproductive behaviour. This allows me to work across disciplines, including endocrinology, behavioural ecology, evolutionary and social psychology, and immunology. Some examples of ongoing projects include:

Division of labour and sex differences in mental health: I have conducted a number of studies to explore how women's financial independence influences their reproductive strategies. I am now interested in how role occupation influences stress, emotional distress, and suicide rates.

Emotional distress and suicide: I am working with NHS24 to look at physical and social environmental predictors of emotional distress and suicide across Scotland and beyond.

The effects of sex- and stress-hormones on sexual signalling: this project seeks to identify the hormonal underpinnings of those male traits that are used to attract females. Examples include the effects of testosterone and cortisol on human male facial appearance and avian plumage.

Funding: My research has been funded by MRC, Richard Benjamin Trust, Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland, the British Academy, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

PhD Students: I am currently supervising 2 PhD students (Jaime Benjamin and Charlotte Elliott).

Collaborations: I collaborate with NHS 24, NHS Tayside, colleagues from across the Universit, and researchers from South Africa, FinlandLatvia , as well as the UK (perception).

Teaching

I teach 'Evolution & Behaviour' (Levels 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5) and Personality & Individual Differences (Levels 1, 2, and 3).

I am the Level 1 Coordinator for Psychology, Coordinator for our MSc in Psychology of Mental Health, and the Deputy Director of MScs in Psychology.

I am the Staff-Student Liaison coordinator for Psychology.
