I have 12 years of experience working with bilingual children in the UK and in Greece as a teacher in primary education. While working in London I did my Masters degree in Literacy Learning and Literacy Difficulties (2009-2011) at the Institute of Education, University of London. Following this, I started my PhD with prof.Jackie Masterson at the UCL on bilingual word representations. After completing the first year I came to Dundee to carry on my research project with Dr.Lynne Duncan in collaboration with Jackie Masterson and Dr.Georgia Niolaki from Coventry University.
My main research interest is on word representations in the bilingual’s mental lexicon of both adults and children. Particularly, I focus on cognates, words that share phonological, orthographic and semantic features and non-cognates, words that share only semantics. Using the masked priming paradigm, my research explores why cognates show greater translation priming effects than non-cognates in two partially different scripts (Greek and English) and how second language proficiency affects priming direction. For the purpose of the study I have constructed a grade – based word frequency database available at www.helexkids.org for Greek/Cypriot children in primary education.
Another line of my research interests involves predictors of spelling with Greek and English children. Particularly, I investigate which lexical and sublexical factors affect spelling in monolingual and bilingual children within different age groups. I also conduct research with children with reading and spelling difficulties. With my collaborators we plan single case experimental studies with dyslexic children that include both assessments and intervention program.
