Why a Finance Master’s at The University of Dundee?

  • Tailor your degree to match your career aspirations with four specialist pathways to choose from - MSc Finance, MSc Finance and Banking, MSc Finance and Risk and MSc Finance and Investment.
  • Successful completion of this degree means that you will be exempt from three ACCA papers (Applied Knowledge AB, MA, and FA).

Throughout the course, you will study the operation of modern business organisations and the role of financial institutions and capital markets in the global economy. You'll learn about statistical techniques that are employed in practice to investigate a firm’s value and asset price. You'll also explore contemporary debates in finance and financial markets.

Business student Deniz Novak

Econometrics for Finance or Quantitative Methods

Across all the MSc Accounting and Finance options, you will select one of two very important modules. Both of these areas are important for employers. Econometrics provides you with an intuitive grasp of the theoretical concepts and basic skills required to estimate and interpret economic models, with a strong focus on statistical analysis. Quantitative Methods equips you with the knowledge and skills required to use statistics in research in accounting or finance and to introduce you to statistical thinking.

Research methods

Examine what academic research is and why it is important in the key module, studied on all the Accounting and Finance degrees. What is research, why are we doing it and how do we create knowledge through it? This module is vital to assist in your dissertation. It also helps your career development, essential if you want to pursue an academic career, but equally important if you want to work in the finance sector. Research skills allow you to analyse and report on data, make decisions and to develop creative thinking and solutions for your business.

Course structure

We offer you the opportunity to study our MSc Finance, or MSc Finance combined with another business topic. Our degrees are flexible, and this gives you the chance to focus on a specific area that interests you. It also shows future employers where your specific interests and skills are. There are four Finance degree options for you to choose from, we refer to these as specialist pathways. The option you choose to study is what will be printed on your graduating certificate.

All the MSc Finance degrees are made up of core modules (ones you must study) and a range of optional modules. Each module is worth 20 credits (except the dissertation which is worth 60) so in total you study six modules and a dissertation, making a total of 180 credits.

You can also contact the course director, Professor Bill Russell, via Skype to discuss the course.
