Biomedical science studies the human body, diseases, and how to treat them. Molecular science studies molecules and their interactions.

Together, biomedical and molecular sciences study living things to understand how they work. They look at cells, genes, and molecules to find out how they affect health and disease. They also help develop new medicines, therapies, and diagnostic tools.

Management oversees people, processes, and systems in a range of sectors.

Why study this course?

This master's course focuses on key areas in the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors. It will help prepare you for a future in these industries.

You'll gain knowledge and skills that employers are looking for. This includes understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of a range of diseases. This can help develop better ways of diagnosing and treating disease. It also includes key management skills.

You'll carry out a bio-business research project, applying what you learn to a real-life project. This will let you focus your business ideas on a bioscience research development. You'll work alongside world-leading researchers and academics from both the School of Life Sciences and the School of Business.

You'll also work alongside staff from our Centre for Entrepreneurship. This is a facility dedicated to improving entrepreneurship opportunities for students and staff.

You'll become an efficient problem solver and a successful project manager. You'll develop skills that will prepare you for your future career. This could be in academia, industry, or a range of other exciting possibilities.

What you will learn

You'll get detailed knowledge and skills in a range of topics, including:

  • biomedical science
  • cell biology - key topics and research directions
  • molecular science - the fundamental units of life, in both normal and diseased states
  • the molecular basis of diseases - genetics, epigenetics and genomics
  • scientific method and skills
  • current research directions in the development of new and improved treatments for disease
  • managing people and organisations
  • leadership and decision making.

You'll also work on your bio-business research project. This gives you experience in designing, executing, and communicating a research project. The result will be a novel business plan, or a critique of innovation opportunities.

Note: the teaching on this course is mostly classroom-based, not lab-based.

The benefits of studying this course with us

We have been the top UK university for biological sciences research since 2014. This is according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise.

In our School of Life Sciences, we host three world-leading centres for excellence. These are in drug discovery, cell signalling, and targeted protein degradation.

We are the world's most influential research institution in pharmaceuticals. We host one of the largest (and longest) collaborations with the pharmaceutical industry.

We are home to over 800 researchers and doctoral students making fundamental discoveries. These include the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying health and disease.

Our teaching and curriculum is informed by the work of this world-leading research. This means you'll learn the most up-to-date theory and practice.

Our teaching is preparing the next generation of employable graduates. All our degrees have a real-world focus.

This course can be studied with different modules from our School of Business. They can give you more of a focus on business, entrepreneurship, or marketing.

A standard version of this course is also available, without the management modules. This gives you more experience in lab work.

Biological Sciences and Biomedical Sciences courses

This course can also be studied with modules in Business, Entrepreneurship, or Marketing (all classroom-based), or as a standalone Biomedical and Molecular Sciences MSc (lab-based).
