Applied neuroscience gives you an advanced understanding of the brain and nervous system. It explores topics such as:

  • neurodegenerative disorders
  • memory formation
  • the neurobiology of mental health
  • psychiatric disorders
  • pain

This master's course in Applied Neuroscience strengthens your job prospects in a range of areas. These can include research careers in academia or industry. They can also include other neuroscience and healthcare-related roles.

It is also an opportunity to convert your studies to neuroscience. It gives you the advanced knowledge and skills required for a career in neuroscience.

You'll be taught by non-clinical and clinical neuroscientists. You'll also be taught by internationally renowned researchers and experts in their fields. They'll explore topics that range from molecular to behavioural neuroscience.

You'll have access to well-equipped laboratories where you can experience cutting-edge research techniques.

On this course we welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds. These include biological science, biomedical science, or psychology for example.

What you learn on this course

The Applied Neuroscience course can be tailored to suit you, whether you have a background in neuroscience or not.

If you are new to the field, you can start by learning the fundamentals of neuroscience. This enables you to develop an understanding of important concepts.

If you already have that knowledge, you can explore specific topics in more detail. These can include optional modules in psychology.

You'll explore topics such as:

  • experimental design and statistics
  • the structure and function of the nervous system
  • memory formation
  • neurodegenerative disorders
  • neurobiology of mental health
  • psychiatric disorders
  • addiction
  • pain and analgesia.

You'll also cover the exciting technologies used in contemporary neuroscience research.

We'll then support you to develop and complete a research project. This can align with your own interests and longer-term career goals. You'll learn research methods and skills.

The benefits of studying Applied Neuroscience with us

The teaching takes place on both our City and Ninewells campuses. On City campus, this happens inside our world-leading Life Sciences research complex. On Ninewells campus, it happens within Ninewells Hospital - a large NHS teaching hospital.

This gives you access to fantastic facilities for neuroscience research. We have laboratories for techniques such as:

  • cloning
  • mutagenesis
  • recombinant expression systems
  • in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology
  • behavioural phenotyping
  • EEG
  • eye tracking
  • focused ultrasound.

We also have human functional imaging facilities, used for both patients and research purposes.

You will study with clinicians, scientists, and researchers doing cutting-edge research. This puts you in the best position for further study or work after graduation.

Madison Card
“The course was appropriately challenging, but it was a tremendous help to have the support of my peers, as well as the lecturers who were able to devote more time to teaching and supporting us because of the small class size.”

Madison Card, MSc Applied Neuroscience graduate (2022) from the USA

Vicki Simpson-Price
“The benefits of studying this course are that you get a greater understanding of the brain and experimental procedures used to investigate many biological and behavioural aspects of human/animal functioning, all of which is highly relatable to many jobs.”

Vicki Simpson-Price, MSc Applied Neuroscience, graduated 2023
