Dr Schweitzer's main current projects examine the role of the individual in the evolution of institutions as well as the role of moral, social, and political institutions in political revolutions and transformations, and the epistemology of utilizing malfunctions as a device for discovery and evaluation.

The general focus of his research interests is on the philosophy of the natural and social sciences, as well as social and political philosophy, in particular the epistemology and methodology of understanding complex causal mechanisms as well as the evolution of biological, social, cultural, and moral systems.

He is currently teaching in Politics, including the first year introductory module ‘Politics and Public Policy’, and acts as a convenor of the module ‘The Globalizing World’, including the Part-time MA Evening Degree component. In Philosophy, he is teaching in the first year introductory module ‘Descartes, Thought and Reality’.

He has held teaching and research positions at the American University in Cairo, Egypt, the Universities of Siegen, Wuppertal, Osnabrück, and Braunschweig, Germany, and the University of Basel, Switzerland.
