Development of Waste Calcined Clays for Low Carbon Concrete
31 January 2023
Concrete is being pushed to become lower carbon with the use of Portland cement clinker in the process of being decarbonised. Whilst the cement industry in China examines technologies including carbon capture and storage/use, materials such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag continue to be alternative materials however there are increasing supply chain challenges. An alternative material being developed is calcined clay which can also replace clinker in concrete. This project will examine this material, its processing requirements, and its performance in concrete, including its impact on fresh properties, strength, mechanical and durability performance. The work will be laboratory based working in tandem with a large UK industry-funded project examining the use of calcined waste clays in the UK.
