After two years of postdoctoral research at Dundee, he joined the University of Bristol, where he spent most of his academic career. Latterly, he was Head of its School of Mathematics, and then Dean of its Faculty of Science. He has also served as an Assessor for the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, reviewing institutions which apply to the Privy Council for degree-awarding powers.
He was elected in 2013 to the University Court as one of the two Assessors of the Graduates Association, and is a member of two Court Committees: Human Resources, and Governance and Nominations. He and his wife Frances now live in Dundee. He has a son who lives in London, and a stepson in New York.
