Valerie graduated from the University of Dundee with a BSc (Hons) in Medical Microbiology. She first started work in the NHS Bacteriology labs at Ninewells Hospital where she gained her Fellowship with the Institute of Biomedical Science. She took 2 years out during this time and completed a MSc by research thesis (potato bacterial diseases) at the Scottish Crop Research Institute (now James Hutton Institute). She moved to the University of Dundee Clinical Pharmacology Department in 1999. She worked in the lab analysing samples from clinical research studies and also managed her own research projects. Valerie received her PhD (steroid hormones and inflammatory processes) in 2005 under the supervision of Professor Allan Struthers and Dr Geoff Lyles. She continued as a Scientific Officer in the Clinical Pharmacology Dept until 2009 when she was appointed as Clinical Research Manager for the Division of Medical Sciences. From here, she moved into the area of Quality Assurance in laboratories and subsequently expanded to become Quality Assurance Manager for Tayside Medical Science Centre (TASC) covering all aspects of clinical research/trials to ensure Good Clinical Practice and regulatory (MHRA) compliance.
