New comic tells the story of student life

A recent graduate from the University of Dundee has captured the comic capers of student life in her first publication.

Ashling Larkin, who graduated with a degree in Animation in 2016, said it was the flexibility of the course at the University's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design which allowed her to follow her passion for comics.

The 94-page comic, ‘Fundee Volume 1’, follows Ashling's own experiences throughout University, capturing her ups and downs over three years of study.

She said, “'Fundee Volume 1' is an honest reflection of my time in Dundee, which I began creating in my first year at University. Readers can expect silly, goofy, fun but also hopefully some more serious moments and lessons to take away.”

Ashling, originally from Eastbourne, said her decision to come to Dundee was made easier because of the creative community thriving in the city.

“Dundee is a home from home for me. My parents are Brazilian and Irish and I was born in England but I feel so much more at home in Scotland.

“Because of places like DC Thomson, the McManus, the V&A Dundee, the Dundee Comics Creative Space and of course the University, I think Dundee has become a great hub for creativity.

“The community here is very approachable and friendly, it's easy to see how Dundee has built a name for itself within the world of comics.”
