Seeing double at University of Dundee as twins graduate

It will be a double celebration for the family of Jennifer and Victoria Livie as the twins collect their identical degrees this week.

The sisters, originally from Northern Ireland, will receive their medical degrees from the University of Dundee on Friday, 23rd June having shared a dream of becoming a Doctor since they were teenagers. “We always wanted to choose a scientific pathway.” said Victoria. “We also did a lot of volunteer work with children with learning difficulties and in a nursing home. So we wanted a career that combined science with helping people and medicine does just that.”

When it came to choosing a university, they also felt the exact draw to come to Dundee. “Based on our offers we could have separated and gone elsewhere.” said Victoria. “But we both fell in love with the city.”

The similarities do not stop there. Once they finish their placements, they would both like to become GPs. “I had thought about moving into obstetrics and gynaecology, but I absolutely loved my GP rotation.” said Jennifer. Victoria added, “I’ve always enjoyed everything on the course, so I’ve never had a specialist subject. Being a GP lets you do a bit of everything.”

The twins have supported each other throughout their Dundee Medical School career. Jennifer said, “We even lived together during our time at University. This came in handy when you were struggling on a piece of coursework. You could just ask your sister.”

This level of support is set to continue, as they both head off to the Respiratory Ward of Ninewells Hospital on the exact same placement.

The University’s Summer Graduation ceremonies take place in the Caird Hall in Dundee from Wednesday, 21st June to Friday, 23th June. Morning and afternoon ceremonies will take place each day as almost 3000 graduates from around the world receive their degrees.
