Degree Show packed during opening weekend

More than 10,000 visitors flocked to this year's University of Dundee Art, Design and Architecture Degree Show during its opening weekend.

Degree Show is Dundee’s largest annual exhibition of art and design. It sees Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design transformed into Scotland’s largest exhibition space and the beginning of the 2017 run saw its two buildings and fourteen floors throng with art lovers, employers, gallery owners, industry professionals and members of the public.

This year’s Degree Show features the work of around 350 of the UK’s brightest emerging creative talents and around 4500 students, staff, guests and their family and friends attended the traditional Preview Evening on 19th May.

A further 6000 visitors took in the exhibition over Saturday and Sunday, a figure boosted by the hundreds of graduates from around the world who flocked back to Dundee for the Alumni Weekend taking place as part of the University’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Degree Show runs until Sunday, 28th May and Professor Paul Harris, Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone, urged anyone who has not already visited the exhibition to do so.

He said, “This year’s Degree Show is a fantastic showcase of eye-catching and though provoking art and design. There really is something for everyone and it is pleasing to see so many families coming along and showing children how much fun exhibitions can be at an early age.

“We are also delighted that so many alumni managed to come along as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations and I am sure they will conclude that things continue to go from strength to strength at Duncan of Jordanstone and the University generally.

“This was the busiest opening Saturday we have known. I suspect the adverse weather helped a little in this regard but if you need to shelter from the rain then why not soak up work from some of the country’s best young artists, designers and architects?”

Over the next week, visits will take place from schools, community groups, applicants, industry partners and other organisations. The estimated benefit to the local economy of the Degree Show is at least £1.5million with bars, restaurants, and hotels among the businesses that report a significant boost in takings at this time each year.

Admission is free and the show is open from 10am until 8pm (Monday – Friday) and 10am to 4pm (Saturday – Sunday) until Sunday, 28th May.
