Discovery Days 2018

Preventing cancer by eating broccoli, treating common skin conditions with sunlight and how to keep secrets in a digital age – just some of the topics up for discussion at the University of Dundee’s Discovery Days next month. My Diabetes My Way spin off project in funding boost

MyWay Digital Health, a spin out company from the University of Dundee, has received a £1million Digital Health Catalyst award from Innovate UK to develop a new artificial intelligence system to support clinicians and people with diabetes. The service builds on the success of the award winning My Diabetes My Way project, which was created at the University for NHS Scotland and now has over 30,000 registrants across the country. Twitter + Citizen Science + AI = improved flood data collection

Researchers from the University of Dundee are combining Twitter, citizen science and cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to develop an early-warning system for flood-prone communities. Dr Roger Wang and his colleagues from the University’s School of Science and Engineering have shown how AI can be used to extract data from Twitter and crowdsourced information from mobile phone apps to build up hyper-resolution monitoring of urban flooding. Radical prosthetics project goes on display in New York

A University of Dundee project that incorporates everyday materials in the design of prosthetic hands, to better suit disability, has gone on display at a prestigious New York museum. Hands of X, an initiative led by design researchers from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD) at the University of Dundee and University College London, design made-to-order prosthetics that come in a choice of materials including leather, woods, wools and metals. Engineering students take top prize in China

A team of engineering students from the University of Dundee scooped up first place in a prestigious competition held at Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology (SIBET) in China this week. More than 100 teams from around the world took part in this year’s biomedical instrumentation innovation competition, which sees teams design new medical devices.
