This module is the first page of the 20 credit RM50033 Understanding and Reading Latin. You will be introduced to basic Latin. You will learn to pick some salient facts out of a Latin document. This will give you a grounding to progress in Latin. This is a wise decision if you are working with Latin documents. 

What will you learn 

In this module you will: 

  • translate simple Latin 
  • find salient points in a Latin document 
  • form a basis for further Latin study 
  • recognise regular forms of words 
  • use a Latin dictionary 

By the end of the module, you will be able to: 

  • have a basic knowledge of the nature of the Latin language 
  • recognise how and when Latin is used in archives 
  • grasp the most common grammatical forms used in archival documents 
  • understand some common document forms 
  • recognise where to find further help 

Assignments / assessment 

Coursework (100%) consisting of:  

  • translation A (30%) 
  • translation B (30%) 
  • assessed tasks (40%)  

This module does not have a final exam
