This module is about the sources that are found in Scottish archives. It also covers the skills needed to support local and family history users.

There is a wide range of record types in Scottish archives. These are relevant to local and family history users. In this module, you will learn what sources are available, how to find them and how to read and use them.

You will look at local and national series of records and the archives themselves. You will look at their form, structure, function and meaning.

The main source material will be records that were created by:

  • the local authorities and their main functions
  • churches
  • civil courts
  • families
  • estates
  • businesses
  • organisations

The module also explores the local functions that generated record types. It will also explore the context that affected the contents of records.

You will also consider how to understand and interpret the information held in these sources accurately. You will consider the challenges in making records understandable and accessible. You will learn how to select and present relevant record types for users.

What will you learn

In this module you will:

  • obtain detailed knowledge of primary sources relevant to local and family history users of archives
  • develop the skills required to undertake research. This will be done either independently or on behalf of clients, employers and stakeholders
  • develop a knowledge of historical resources. These are available for the study of Scottish local history and family history in local and national archives and libraries
  • understand why and how primary source material is produced, retained and preserved
  • have the ability to analyse, interpret and evaluate historical sources and data. In particular you will study those relating to local and family history
  • develop an introductory knowledge of palaeography and diplomatic
  • obtain a knowledge of research resources available remotely in electronic format 

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • understand the range of Scottish record types which are relevant to local and family history users
  • appreciate the challenges and issues associated with primary research
  • understand the importance of the context and function of records for discovery and use
  • appreciate which skills are required to make records accessible and understandable
  • have knowledge and experience of reading and understanding contemporary source material. You will see how it relates to local and family history

Assignments / assessment

Coursework (100%) consisting of: 

  • essay (30%)
  • report (30%)
  • assessed tasks (30%) 
  • discussion board participation (10%)

This module does not have a final exam.
