PH51008

This final module of the non-relativistic quantum mechanics sequence introduces the quantum mechanics driving the revolution in Quantum Technologies. These technologies exploit the new opportunities arising from our developing understanding of quantum entanglement. The module introduces quantum cryptography and quantum information, including quantum computing, and it also provides further coverage of perturbation theory and quantum dynamics.

Topics include:

  • Angular momentum and matrix mechanics. Unitary operators. Symmetry and symmetry transformations.

  • Time-independent perturbation theory.

  • Quantum mechanics of composite systems. Quantum entanglement. The density operator. The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox, Bell’s inequalities, quantum cryptography, introduction to quantum information, and quantum computing.

  • Time-dependent perturbation theory.
